IOB is a research institute combining basic and clinical research. Its mission is to drive innovations in understanding vision and its diseases and to develop new therapies for vision loss.

At IOB, scientists in both basic and clinical research work together to increase the understanding of the fundamental structure, function, and disease mechanisms of the retina and other visual areas, and use the understanding gained to develop innovative treatments.

Associated to the University of Basel, IOB is governed as a foundation established in 2017 by the University of Basel, the University Hospital Basel and Novartis with the support of the government of the Canton Basel City.
