In a study published in Neuron, Emilie Macé from Botond Roska’s group and collaborators demonstrate how functional ultrasound imaging can yield high-resolution, brain-wide activity maps of mice for specific behaviors. The non-invasive technology has promising applications for ophthalmologic, neurologic and psychiatric diseases.

IOB will host the Basel University Hospital Ophthalmology Department’s Annual Meeting. The meeting will be held in German and English.

The Bertarelli Foundation has awarded collaborative research grants to four teams of scientists representing Harvard Medical School, its affiliated teaching hospitals, and IOB. The three-year grants ($300,000 per project per year) focus on understanding and treating deafness, blindness and pain.

GenSight Biologics in Paris started its first optogenetic gene therapy trial. With AAVs developed by teams around Botond Roska and José Sahel, the novel approach aims to restore vision by a single injection of gene for a light-sensitive protein to make the retina responsive to light.
